Who is April Raintree?
One would assume that childhood is a time where you’re careless and free to imagine and play as children do, your only responsibility is to be a kid. For April Raintree born April 18th, year unknown, and a half breed, would know nothing of childhood. Born into poverty and alcoholic parents, April’s life would be nothing short of disappointments and the grand lure of a shade of white.

Once again defeated by her color, April would take advantage of a large divorce settlement and start her life over with her sister Cheryl. At odds with her sister’s beliefs about their people, April would tune to mothering her little sister again. With their differences and unable to help each other and at crossroads, April would watch Cheryl become the very thing she was running away from, another drunken Indian. Encountering her past in her future, it would take April to lose her sister to the very thing she lost her own parents to and come full circle to accept herself as a strong native woman and break the vicious circle of abuse.

Reading In Search of April Raintree was a direct reflection of my own childhood. Though I am not native, my own personal experiences I share with April, and know all too well the challenges of overcoming the past actions of alcoholics. After reading the book I revaluated my own life, and questioned myself and can only give thanks to have the opportunity to have read this
