In a time of despair, one may resort to the unspeakable to fill the gap missing in their lives. In this despiteful time, one is taken advantage of without realization. The induced state soon becomes one's natural state, and the rest of the world slips away as they enter hell on earth. All, the course, one is oblivious too due to the ‘feel-good’ feeling. “Alcohol is the anesthesia by which we endure the operation of life.” (Shaw) This quote depicts how alcohol numbs one's sense of reality to escape the hardships of life. In Beatrice Mosioniers novel, April Raintree, Cheryl is, unfortunately, a victim of alcohol abuse, which foreshadows a series of events the ultimately led to her devastating suicide.
