Playing the Role The book, April Morning by Howard Fast, is a book about a boy named Adam Cooper who is fighting two wars, the Revolutionary War, and a war on becoming a man. During the story, there are characters who help Adam become a man. The three minor characters that take part in big roles and influence Adam a great deal are Ruth Simmons, Sarah Cooper, and Granny Cooper. “I suppose I’d be the loneliest girl in Massachusetts if you went away” (Fast 41). This quote from the book mainly described what kind of character Ruth Simmons is. She loves Adam whole-heartedly and wants to marry him. This quote by Cousin Simmons, Ruth’s father, sums up her calloused nature. “Your grandmother would not hide in the cellar if all the dragons of England were in her front yard” (Fast 162). She is the mother of Moses and she continues to treat him as her son even though he is a grown man. With this, Moses and her tend to disagree on many subjects including on how he treats Adam. She was not wooed when it came to her faith. Granny Cooper although being a woman of that time is very wise and educated. When Adam tries to lie to Granny she responds, “You may lie to others Adam. But don’t lie to me” (Fast 202). With her knowledge and years behind her, she greatly influenced Adam and helped him with his problems. Granny was one of the most important and interesting characters in this story, mainly because of her influences she had on Adam. Howard Fast used these characters; Ruth Simmons, Sarah Cooper, and Granny Cooper, in a minor rolls, but they were definitely crucial in this story. These three women helped Adam overcome many major obstacles throughout the story. In the end without the help of these three Adam would not have won either
