In the book “East of Eden”, author John Steinbeck includes many biblical allusions, one of which being the story of Cain and Abel, portrayed by Charles and Adam in the first generation, and Cal and Aron as Adam’s children in the second generation. The allusions of original sin and overcoming it by choice not only relate to how biblical characters can be represented in real life but also depict the nature of humanity on the basis of psychoanalysis: are humans naturally good, bad, or it is a matter of choice? In the first generation, Cain is represented by Charles, Adam’s half-brother, who was always jealous that Cyrus loved Adam more than him. The climax happened when Cyrus, the father of both, favoured Adam’s pup, which was picked up in a…

In the novel, one of the main characters, Adam Trask is constructed based on the biblical Adam as well as the biblical Abel. Adam Trask is described as a trusting being with a genuine nature, setting him up as the Abel figure in the first generation of the Trask family. He is his father’s favourite and inadvertently stimulates the jealously of his brother, Charles. This favouritism in turn angers Charles, who so diligently attempts to win over his father’s affection.…

The role of doctors in both the treatment of cancer patients and their families plays a critical role in helping both the patient and their family deal with the stress, burden, and, in some cases, grief during and after treatment. This is evident in Jerome Groopman’s novel, The Measure of Our Days, especially in the story of Matt. Throughout this story, Groopman demonstrates this role, as both he and Dr. Samuels give Billy hope during Matt’s cancer treatments, and aid him in accepting Matt’s inevitable death. Throughout Matt’s first treatment, Groopman and Samuels provide a source of comfort and hope, allowing Billy to combine both his faith in God and his faith in the doctors, and their ability to help Matt heal, as when he first hears Matt’s diagnosis, where he “pressed his hands together in a powerful upward arc…

However, there are some films that attempt to accurately depict disabilities, such as the 2009 film, Adam. According to Lerner and Johns (2015), “Asperger’s syndrome is characterized by a reluctance to accept change; an inflexibility of thought; and all-absorbing, narrow area of interest” (pg. 192).…

In the novel Song of Solomon, written by Toni Morrison, the concept of flight is used as a literal and metaphorical symbol of escape. Flight has several meanings and interpretations such as, soaring through the sky, running away from something, suicide, a continuous series of stairs from one landing or floor to another, etc. What most people don’t realize is that by choosing to fly away as a means to escape, a person is also deliberately choosing to abandon their life while leaving their family and friends confused and angry. There are three characters in the novel, Robert Smith, Solomon, and Milkman that choose to “fly” as a means to escape. The novel, Song of Solomon, begins with the unanticipated suicide of Robert Smith, an agent of the North Carolina Mutual Life Insurance company.…
