Appropriate Stereotypes In Sports

It seems that in society today it is becoming more common place to hear stories of inappropriate behaviors in sports. In particular we hear of these stories in the NFL and how the male dominated leadership has been ineffective in addressing these prevailing problems of inappropriate behavior, including sexual and domestic violence. Therefore, it is imperative that women take leadership positions in sports to initiate and enforce no tolerance policies for inappropriate behaviors, to change the current transactional culture to a more transformational culture, and educate prospective and new athletes on the responsibilities of being public figures. NFL commissioner Roger Goodell recently acknowledged that he mishandled the Ray Rice situation where the football player assaulted his girlfriend punching her unconscious. It was only until it became public and there was an outcry that the commissioner imposed an indefinite suspension on the player. It seems many excuses have come from the commissioner during this investigation. …show more content…

The bigger the name and the more notoriety, the more industry leaders are willing to overlook inappropriate behaviors. In an article in the Journal of intercollegiate sports, the authors state that women generally have more of a transformational leadership style. The transformational leader fosters respect, integrity, trust and accountability. They do not go along with the status quo but challenge and push for change and encourage those under their leadership to problem solve. This leader also has high standards and is willing to take the time to address issues individually. This leader has what is best for the organization as its priority. One of the most recent ethical dilemmas in American sport is the Title IX lawsuit of Hernandez vs. Baylor University. This is without a doubt one of the most prominent Title IX lawsuits to be filed in the 2000s. The lawsuit filed by Hernandez specifically states that she was raped by a player on the Bears’ football team, and that the university police refused to accommodate to her specific needs following the incident, simply because the rape occurred off-campus. Also, the lawsuit claims that the university failed to properly train their employees on the appropriate responses to sexual assault, and other Title IX policies. Perhaps the most outstanding piece of information in this case is that the university was aware that the player involved,…

The NFL should take more time thinking about punishments given. A domestic violence case is deserving of a harsher penalty than probably cheating. These professionals are role models for younger kids. With these punishments, they are saying that they would rather have someone beat a female than to probably cheat. Both of these are bad but with there not being conclusive evidence to prove the New England Patriots did cheat their penalties are…

Hi, Eduer I can see how you relate to the stereotype of African American’s being very good at sports due to your personal experience. If I were in your shoes I would have probably imagined the same thing without even realizing I was stereotyping. I believe we learn these kinds of behavior by what we see and hear in music and television and media in general, in this case we see it very often in advertisements and sports. Another stereotype you mentioned that is greatly influenced by the media is that African American are involved with gang violence and drug. We see that all-over television, movies and music as well, the media plays a big role in depicting stereotypes into pop culture so that we can become familiar with them and think it’s…

This potential problem maybe, be increased media attention that athletes' criminal activities receive. In light of this situation, it is understandable that commissioners will lay down the law on these players a bit thicker, without making significant damage to other parts of the organization and keep the fans best interest at heart. Finally, leagues are also concerned with the individual character of their athletes. Because these athletes are being broadcasted on tv, players are role models for the kids out here. The public criminal justice system takes this into account which could be the reason they sometime goes light on punishment, but they also sometime send a message in the words of just because you're a superstar, doesn't make you immortal or immune to the law.…

The NFL has viewed the public as an organisation that values its brand, so the NFL above all else will protect its brand “including the health of its players and their families” are second to how the people view their brand (Werly). It is clear how the NFL considers domestic abuse as a threat to how the people who watch it view them and the player who play in the games. A coach from the Chicago bears said “that during his 30 years in the NFL, teams covered up hundreds of domestic violence incidents” to protect the way people view the NFL (Werly). The NFL has covered up hundreds of cases because they are scared of losing viewers and having to face the families and deal with theses players in the right way not just suspending them for one game but making them face the consequences for their…

However that is solely the number of teams based on incidents that were reported. According to judicial experts, victim advocates and sociologists who study gender violence, “Many rape and sexual assault incidents are never reported to police and many charges filed with university authorities are not revealed publicly" (Brubaker). Although domestic violence is a violent and dangerous crime many professional athletes firstly get away with their actions because they are either not reported, or obtain weak or no punishments by the sports’ leagues. Even though critics like coaches and fans argue that the NFL and other professional sport leagues should let the legal system deal with accusations and punishment of domestic violence crimes. The National Football League and other professional sports leagues should suspend players for a minimum of eight weeks for those who are accused of domestic violence because it gives a message to the public that domestic violence is not acceptable, and because the…
