John Updike’s “A&P” and Raymond Carver’s “Cathedral” contain main characters who experience an unexpected change in the way they view the world from people that they’ve formed a stereotype of. In “A&P”, Sammy, the main character, is influenced by three young girls while in “Cathedral”, the husband, is influenced by Robert to bring out this change in them. In both texts, the objects for change are similar in that the narrators viewed them negatively, they unexpectedly came in to the narrator’s lives, and they represent a way of escape from the closed world the characters live in. In John Updike’s “A&P”, three teenage girls walk into a grocery store wearing only bathing suits.…

The short story “A&P” by John Updike utilizes motivation in a unique way to drive the story forward and affect other elements of the story. The protagonist is a teenager working a cashier job in a supermarket during the summer, in a place where you wouldn’t expect to see people walking around in provocative outfits. The literary devices of the story are affected by the protagonist’s motivation, and the motivation also makes him a very believable character (thanks to a variety of factors that we’re able to glean about the protagonist). When it comes to the girls in the story, the reader can understand why the protagonist’s attention is drawn to them even without his motivation. The girls are miles away from where it would be appropriate to be wearing such swimwear and walk into the store without a second thought (as it appears to the reader).…

Portraying black women as Jezebel’s by nature is a long -lasting stereotype. The jezebel stereotype is one that has been used to put down African American women since the beginning of slavery. Throughout history the white women were seen as pure, hardworking and respectable, while black women were always seen as promiscuous, seductive and tempting men. Maria Miller Stewart who was a servant, teacher, abolitionist and women's rights activist shows through her literary work "Religion and the Pure Principles of Molarity, the Sure Foundation on which we Must Build." that black women show the same qualities as any other race of women and that they don't deserve the title of Jezebel. Also there will be images of how African American women…

The short story A & P, written by John Updike, is different because of the way that Updike is able to write in present and past tense from the perspective of a teenager thinking back to his days working in a grocery store. The story is about some girls who walk into the store wearing nothing but their bathing suits. These girls draw everybody’s attention away from their work and onto them simply because of the way that they’re dressed. Besides the distraction, most of the conflict does not occur until the store manager notices the girls and scolds them about their attire. The comedic patter of the story is very evident with the way the narrator gives the girls and others in the store little nicknames that are almost somewhat offensive.…
