Appropriate Building Skills: Personal Narratives

It is hard to believe that this class is already over. It seems like it just started a couple weeks ago. We have gone through a lot of material, and I have learned even more in this short period of time. This makes it difficult to identify only two skills that I have improved upon. I found the skills I learned for building my resume to be some of the most valuable. The other skills I found to be valuable are my artifact gathering skills. Resume skills are timeless. I know that I am very likely to switch jobs frequently throughout my professional career. So, naturally resume building skills will be skills that I frequently use throughout my lifetime. In this course I learned how to better direct my resume for the position I want. By targeting

“A leader has to watch every word he or she says and quickly learns that you can’t go through life without a few critics, some well deserved” (pg. 5), this quote as some of the beginning words from MacDonald truly shows that a leader has responsibilities to uphold to. I found it interesting that he showed these responsibilities are not only external, but internal as well. Many do not realize the internal battles that leaders in ministry go through, and in order for leaders to handle a situation in a mature manner; they must uphold to the responsibilities of character they are expected to maintain. There are many internal and external expectations of leaders that are specified in Building Below the Waterline, but only some really stood out to me as factors that I would practice more than others in my leadership positions.…

A weakness that I have is that I do not know how to say no to individuals that ask me for help since I love to help people. It is important that I learn to say no when helping others gets in the way of me accomplishing my tasks. It is important that I do both, but not when I run the risk of not meeting my deadlines and me staying late hours after work to get my work done. It has not been an easy task saying no, but I am learning to be okay with saying no because it is important that it does not interfere with my responsibilities.…

“Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world,” said Nelson Mandela. When President Obama launched the Young African Leaders Initiative in 2010 to support the emerging generation of African leaders, this was to educate us to change Africa. I believe this Professional Development Experience is intended to give Fellows practical training and the opportunity to learn transferable skills, and apply theories learned in civic leadership classes in the real-world setting. As a leader, I seek to participate actively and productively in the field of global health leadership and health policy and to fill a strategic position in a multinational institution working on promoting health, particularly in Africa.…

It is important to develop skills that will not only improve your life but also your college life experience. Upon looking at the General Education Competencies that appears on the class syllabus, I decided on which skills are most important to develop in my humble opinion. One skill for example, that I find particularly essential is the ability to research and examine information, resources, and evidence that are both for academic use and those that are not necessarily for academic use. My reasoning is that, being able to have evidential support to what you are stating is critical since what you say typically follows you for the rest of your life.…

The idea that excites me the most about being a returner is getting to know a new housing staff. The late night chats during Fall training; that first set of rounds where you get to go through and see what everyone came up with for their hall decorations; the first weekend duty where everyone congregates into the office for the night. Getting to know my Lower Quad staff this year came all at once - it wasn’t a slow process like I anticipated it to be. By the fourth night of training I was having conversations with my coworkers that it would otherwise take me years to bring up. While these bonds will remain after the year is over, many of us will graduate, or find ourselves in other roles, meaning that we will have the opportunity to make those…
