Joseph Stalin was born into a peasant estate on December 18, 1878 to Vissarion and Ekaterina Stalin in Gori, Georgia. Little is known about Stalin’s father Vissarion, other than he became employed at a shoe factory when Stalin was about the age of ten; because he left his family when Stalin was still a child, Stalin had “very little to do with him” (Kuromiya 2) from that point forward.
