Summary
The paper, Applying Ethical Theories: Interpreting and Responding to Student Plagiarism is written by Neil Granitz and Dana Loewy which was published in 2007. In this paper, the two authors talk about the growing concern about plagiarism increasing in many ways. The main reasons discussed in this paper are the internet and the ease of access of huge library databases at the tip of our fingertips.
The paper opens with the increase in the use of internet which is directly responsible for the increased no of students resorting to plagiarism. In the next part, the paper is set to determine the main reasons students use to justify their crime. In order to do this, the authors dig deep …show more content…
It opens quite strongly against internet related plagiarism. However, in the last paragraph of page 294, the authors have misled the readers stating plagiarism is a natural human behaviour. This information is true and to support the statement a reference “Cheating is common in education” (Cizek, 1999, Cheating on tests: how to detect it and prevent it.), but this is not the issue to be discussed in the paper. As a reader still on the second page of the paper would become very confused as to what the author is trying to establish in their report. Following the same paragraph, the authors use the example of copying Biblical text which someone might not know is also plagiarism. According to Regent University Law Review “All major English translations, except the authorised versions are subject to copyright.” (Regent U. L. Rev. 1 (2001-2002) Copyright God: Enforcement of Copyright in the Bible and Religious Works). On page 295 of the paper, the authors did indeed put out very strong points on how the rise of internet related plagiarism has almost tripled in a year (Zack, 1998). On page 296 in the third paragraph the claim is true and does add to the points made on how internet is aiding students to plagiarise more easily as stated “ Many students are comfortable with computers than their lecturer and may know full potential of computer cheating” (Neil.C, Rowe, 2013, Cheating in online …show more content…
In the first paragraph of the page, the authors use an example to better explain the reasons students use in this ethical situation. ‘‘I didn’t know what plagiarism was’’/‘‘I didn’t know that plagiarism was wrong” (Granitz, N D. Loewy (2007), Applying Ethical Theories: Interpreting and Responding to Student Plagiarism, Journal of Business Ethics, vol.72, pp 293-306). The above-stated reason is quite true and I can relate to that example very well. In India, we were not thoroughly informed about copying other peoples work, and I admit I did not know this was a serious crime until I did this assignment. To support my statement a reference from the US national library of Medicine which says “Academic plagiarism is on the rise in India also. Increasing pressure to publish, deficient training in ethical scientific writing, ignorance, oversight and lack of statutory controls and clear policies to deal with scientific misconduct in academics has led to the rise of research misconduct which can severely impact the growth of India's higher education system.” (Deepak Juyal, Vijay... Lung India, 2015: Rise of academic plagiarism in India: Reasons, solutions and resolution). In the next paragraphs the authors discuss other ethical philosophies including Utilitarianism, Rational self-interest and
