1. What are your reasons for applying to Rutgers University School of Social Work? Discuss how your personal, professional, and/or community experiences and values affected your decision?
The most important influence for pursing a graduate degree at Rutgers University School of Social Work is to break down barriers and obstacles that have been placed in front of me. I grew up in a non-tradition family so I never had an example of what life should be. My mother was a victim of domestic violence, my father was never around, and my siblings were both into the drug game. I will admit, not one person in my family finished high school and at a young age I knew I would have to be the one. Until one day I realized life is about the steps you take and

Describe why you believe you will be a successful online student and what challenges might you face as an online student?
At Rutgers University School of Social Work, I know I will be a successful online learner. In being a successful online student I understand that my instructors are facilitators of my learning process and that I must be dedicated and a self-starter. Since undergrad, I have always put schoolwork at the top of the list of priorities. This is a chance to work and continue school, which many people in my circle haven’t even dreamt of. This is my education and future we are talking about and it is only in arms reach.

The only challenge I anticipate facing would be not having the pleasure to build a relationship with my professors. I don’t want to be just “Alicia Young” to a professor but instead “Alicia Young with the bubbly personality and beautiful smile”. I want my professors to know my work ethic and trust I will always be accountable for my own work. It is difficult for me to see this possible as an online student. However, at Rutgers University School of Social Work, I trust I will be have the best team of professors that will help me with any questions/concerns I may have. I wouldn’t be applying for this particular program if I had any doubts that I wouldn’t be given the chance at a promising education and future at Rutgers University School of Social Work. I believe in this particular program, and I pray the program believes in me

If I was put into English II I would probably lose interest and become unfocused, but with a fast moving class I would gain motivation to learn. I enjoy working and reading independently, so this class would be perfect for me. However, I do not oppose the idea of working with classmates and I will gladly cooperate.…
