Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) Uses The Principles Of Applied Behavior Analysis

Natural Environment Teaching (NET) uses the principles of Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) to teach in the natural environment (the real world). Some people that are not familiar with ABA would not find it weird to not teach a child with ASD outside of teaching them in a natural setting, but most ABA therapist rather not teach outside a controlled setting, to sum it up they are not comfortable doing so. This in my opinion will have some serious ramifications. An ABA therapist objective is to teach a child with ASD to "behave properly" or so it seems that is all an ABA therapist is really good for. A glorified babysitter some would say. This is a misconception, though many ABA therapists make it seem factual, since they refuse to apply all techniques

Introduction “The image often evoked to describe autism is that of a beautiful child in a glass shell.” (Schopler, E., Mesibov, G., 1995) For decades many parents have clung to this notion, of hoping that one day a means might be found to break the invisible barrier. Thus far, no cure has been found. Perhaps the time has come for the image to be shattered. Perhaps the time has come to concentrate, rather, on understanding the minds of the autistic.…

Discrete Trial Learning (DTT) breaks down behaviors into different, small parts that focus on one behavior and works through toward more difficult tasks. This method teaches certain skills by giving positive reinforcement as the child with ASD begins to learn the behaviors. Beginning DTT means focusing on a child’s individual needs such as, tantrums, peer interaction, play and communication. Throughout treatment, as skills are mastered, changes in instruction are made, newly mastered skills are reviewed to ensure they are retained, and skills are practiced more and more in less structured environment and tested among natural environments. DTT uses a form of chaining, that starts small and works up to retained behavior.…

Early childhood is a crucial period for growth and development of the brain however, consistent stress during these periods can lead to structural and physiological changes, which in turn can lead to affective disorders in adulthood (Korsi et al., 2011). Early childhood and adolescence is an important time for the growth of neurobiological processes that will eventually lead to development of cognitive functioning and emotional behaviors (Baker et al., 2012). A few of the brain regions that will be focused on are limbic system structures such as the hippocampus, amygdala, and prefrontal cortex (Duman & Monteggia, 2006). A few other areas of the brain will be touched on in order to see how they are changed in individuals with affective disorders.…
