Growing up in Vietnam and moving to the U.S. in 2012, it can be said that I am a new immigrant to the U.S. And for most immigrants, they face many challenges in a new country and culture, one of which is the language. Since that time, I have tried to improve my English continuously. Beginning the academic journey at Evergreen Valley College in 2013, ESL courses was required for me to attend college, and the tool to catch up the curriculum.
Like many other immigrants, I realize that English is a barrier for me to achieve success. Actually, some of my relatives advised me that I had better find some basic jobs without requiring education than going to colleges because I cannot compete with native speaking students. This advice sounded reasonable to me, for I am not as young as most students and I have to work part time as well as study. I accept my weakness, but I refuse to let it discourage my ambition for learning and improvement. Learning is a process of continuous development, so I try my best and gradually progress.

Known as a college of Business and Economics and a quality quarter system, I believe East Bay is a bridge for me to achieve academic accomplishments, and a door to open my future career. For nearly four years in America, I value the importance of education and its guide to success, as Nelson Mandela once said “Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world”. With my enthusiasm, I decide to overcome obstacles and bring pride to my family. My Mom still lives in Vietnam, and I hope that she will be here with me in the near future to see my success. She is the support and the motive for my endeavor. Finally, I want to say to myself and other students: “Believe in yourself. No door is closed to you if you try

“Broken” English negatively impacts immigrants on a daily basis. A great example of this negative impact is shown through “Mother Tongue” by Amy Tan. Tan’s parents fled from China in the 1940’s with many other people because of China’s Cultural Revolution and when they came to America, they had trouble assimilating with Americans. Tan, on the other hand, had a less difficult time adapting to the American Culture because she was born in America. In Mother Tongue, Tan begins the passage by explaining how powerful language is and then continues on to tell stories that help prove her point.…

The first week of being at this academy tested my pride, integrity, and mental strength in ways I thought weren't possible. Being one of the worst pianists here due to my lack of experience eroded me from the inside, and many times throughout the course of this experience, I felt like quitting. Self loathing ensued, and the words of my teacher kept me wanting to triumph, even under harsh circumstances. I know see the progress I have made by always trying my hardest and not thinking about what others may say if I fail in the progress. This motto is what I live by, and I will forever try my hardest in whatever goal I set my eyes…

The institution has a Biological Sciences degree which allows me, as a soon to be graduate from Hagerstown Community College with an Associate’s in Biology, to pursue and finish the next level of post-secondary education, achieving a Bachelor’s degree. In addition to pursuing a degree in Biological Sciences, UMBC has many clubs and activities to be involved in which will allow me to create new friends and provide a way to network with other students that has the same goals as me. I strongly believe that at my local community college, most of the students and professors don’t share similar ideas and goals as me and was difficult to find and achieve things I want to do after college. Thus, my passion to learn has slump down a bit.…

Growing up, I never expected to have the opportunity to go away to college. I thought I would have no other choice but to attend a community school. Not that there is anything wrong with community college, but my family just did not have the money to send me anywhere else. Although my parents have always supported me in anything I’ve ever done, they never really pushed me to focus on my future. They probably don’t even know what FAFSA is.…

Thesis: Coming here as an international student, I faced a great challenge in language barrier, and illegal immigrants are experiencing the same difficulty; that is why, although the United States government’s policies toward immigration change over time, I support current actions to be easier on undocumented immigration. Going into this class my thoughts of what an ELL was before reading Coehlo (2004) and Li, Myles, & Robinson (2012) was someone who had immigrated to Canada and English was not their first language. It is probably a common assumption among the majority of the population even though it is a wrong one. I also only viewed an ELL as someone who is initially learning the language, but as talked about in the lesson, the learning never really stops. I never would have viewed an individual who is a Canadian citizen, and has been in Canada for quite a while as an ELL.…

Becher (2011) thinks the ELLs have two misconceptions. Firstly, most learners want to improve English a lot through talk with native speakers or their peers.
