Improved Essays
In theatre and on screen, the main activity takes place behind the scenes of the performance itself. Without all the artists and technicians which carry out all the backstage work, productions would not have the same captivating effect that they do on the audience.

In 2015 I directed, with Flinders University Drama Centre, Who’s Afraid of the Working Class. This production was part of my assessment at Flinders University for my Bachelor of Creative Arts (Honours) – Directing Degree. Originally when planning on critically reflecting on this production I had planned to omit the requirements and restrictions that the university placed upon the process however on further reflection those requirements and restrictions are comparable to those placed upon a director by a producer or artistic director. This process included auditions, production meetings, readings, rehearsals and the eventual staging of the production. Along with myself on this production was Morag Cook who assisted me in design, Dr Anne Thompson who assisted me in the role of director, and Andrew Bailey who was our Stage Manager.…

Although technical theatre is not my cup of tea, I did enjoy learning about some of the things. That is why I am choosing to talk about my two favorite things we discussed this semester: scenic painting and drafting. The first, scenic painting is the one I had the most experience with coming into. To find employment opportunities dealing with scenic painting I went to google and typed in “jobs that require scenic painting.” Surprisingly, I found more than I would have thought.…

I cannot remember a moment of my life where theatre has not been important for me. Being involved from a young age, I was destined to be on stage. It was not until I entered high school when I realized how difficult theatre can be; actors cannot go on stage without understanding the play, designers cannot outline anything without the proper information, and a director cannot direct without a grasp on the themes and ideas of the show. It all comes down to the research for the production. Without this literacy practice of research, no one can put on the literacy event of a performance.…

I have decided to write my paper on the career in film, movie editing. I found that I have a knack for editing and quite enjoy it. A film editor is a person who takes unneeded snippets of film, removes it, and puts them together in a specific order to create a finished product. Going through the footage once the filming is done, selecting the scenes, and putting them in an specific order to tell the story in a way that the audience is entertained and understands the point you are trying to get across is another thing that goes into video editing. Video editors also collab with cinematographers and sound editors to bring sound and light together.…

The heat from the stage lights, the watchful gazes of the audience, and the sweat dripping off of our faces as we struggle to remember our lines, these sensations of being on stage are what caused the performing arts to become not only an activity, but also a passion and an unexpected source of personal growth. Through my experiences in drama and music I have been able to discover my own meaning of fulfillment and define who the person behind my appearance truly is. My passion in the performing arts started when I was a young child first learning to play the violin. Picking up the violin at the age of 6, I became stuck on one of the most basic songs for almost a whole year. At that time no one believed that I could play the violin, my teacher thought that I was too hyperactive and even my mom attempted to convince me to quit.…

“We’re all a bunch of creatives that don’t know how to work linearly,” Bailey Sorensen responds after being asked a common stereotype of those who comprise her career field, graphic design. This perception of graphic designers seems to be an ongoing theme among global citizens which can be attested to after having scoped the World Wide Web for confirmation. People seem to think that those who are artistically-inclined simply are “spastic” or that they cannot keep their train of thought constant. The same individuals who stereotype graphic designers, and artists in general, to be all over with their ideas also categorize graphic designers to be partially lazy and/or unable to complete a project, which is the complete opposite typically. Even…

This semester I worked in the Scene Shop for Production Experience 1 for both Vinegar Tom and Dead Man’s Cell Phone. Because I came on later than the rest of my peers, I caught the tail-end of work for Dead Man’s Cell Phone. I also participated in light hang and strike for Vinegar Tom as part of my Production Experience this semester. In terms of scene shop, it was new for me because I had never spent such a concentrated amount of time in that aspect of production or worked on projects on such a timescale. The only other experience I had with scene shop was what I had learned in the half credit Introduction to Stagecraft course I took at Vassar College, which involved learning how to work with wood and how to design props.…
