Before the summer of my sophomore year, I had not thought about my post high school plans beyond knowing I would like to attend college. However, I attended a STEM camp at Valparaiso University in Indiana where I met former astronaut and Naval Academy graduate, Ken Ham. He inspired me to not only begin my own flight training, but to start investigating the Naval Academy. The more I learned about the Naval Academy and the different opportunities that serving as an officer in the military presented, the more determined I became to attend. I understand that the decision to attend a service academy is not to be taken lightly. Besides researching online and reading books, I have attended service academy day in Oshkosh, Wisconsin since my sophomore year, and had conversations with my Blue and Gold Officer, Cory Bouck. One of my favorite parts about the service academy day is listening to current midshipmen talk about their experiences and what they are involved in. Their dedication, passion, and pride to serve the United States of America is evident in their presentations. This dedication and pride is something I feel …show more content…
It is only when our character is put to the test that we learn our strengths. My test came the winter of my junior year. I had just gotten home from school and let our two labradors outside. Our pond had not frozen over in the middle and I noticed something odd in the open water. I quickly realized that it was Diamond, our dog, in the hole in the ice. Running outside, I tried to coax her to climb out on her own. I knew the situation was getting desperate. She was having a hard time keeping her head above water. Carefully crawling out on the thin ice, I tried to pull her out by her collar, to no avail. Inching closer to the edge, I reached down into the water to take hold of her legs. Lifting her out, I carried her into the house and treated her for

During my senior year of high school, I participated in an Office of Naval Research sponsored competition called SeaPerch. SeaPerch pits teams of students against each other to create a Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV) and complete a series of underwater challenges. Every day for the majority of my senior year, I would go from school to work and then home, where I spent every moment of my free time working on my team’s ROV. Countless hours were spent devising new ideas, testing them, and watching them sink uselessly to the bottom of my testing tank. On competition day, however, our team excelled, scoring third out of over 50 teams.…

Although I have not received any STEM-related awards, being at the academy would afford me the opportunity to develop friendships with students from around the nation, develop teamwork skills and see what it would be like to push myself in physical and mental situations. Being accepted to attend the Naval Academy Summer Seminar would be a great honor, and would create opportunities that would help me mature into a Midshipman, that will eventually lead me to develop into a naval officer. I remember being so excited on our School shadow days as I would get to attend work with my father and see and do some of what his job entailed him to do. Values of honesty and integrity were ingrained in me from an early age by my parents and have since become the core values that I try to use to guide me in life. I'm drawn to the Naval Academy because I find both the challenge and rewards exceptional, the opportunity to serve my country, the daily structure it provides, the strong ethical code, and the diverse challenges it offers, physically and mentally are merely a few that the Naval academy has to offer I believe in my heart it is exactly where I need to be in order to continue on my path to being a leader and scholar.…

The events portrayed in the video filled me with a desire to stand with the cadet candidates, persevering through any difficulties thrown their way to achieve a bigger goal, making their families proud and making something for themselves. In addition, I want to go out a make a difference to those in my community and my country. The extremely appealing aspect towards attending the academy, to me, is that the academy is a place in which hard work, integrity, leadership and values determine status as opposed to most other schools in which gender, race and or economic status determines the status of a student; due to this, I strongly believe that the academy is a place in which I will excel and reach my…

My interest in the Naval Academy and the fleet began as just another college option. I have not had any family member serve in the Navy and was rather indifferent to military service, other than my admiration for the men and women who serve. As I continued to explore my options, the Naval Academy remained on the backburner until I visited for the summer STEM program two years ago. As soon as I first walked on post, I instantly knew I loved it--the beautiful old architecture, the shimmering blue water, and the white-clad Midshipmen marching crisply down Stribbling. This past summer, when I visited again for NASS, I decided the Naval Academy was the one for me.…
