Application Essay: A Career As A Speech Pathologist

Receiving the Shimkin Scholarship will allow me to invest more time into exploring the different occupational fields I express interest in. While I am working towards receiving a Bachelor’s degree in Psychology with the intent on completing a Master’s degree in Speech and Language Pathology, there are a few different options I can explore for the career I choose to pursue after I complete both my Bachelor’s and my Masters degrees. I have recently shadowed two different Speech Pathologists as well as an Audiologist and I volunteered at a National Voice Convention. Previously I have always intended on specializing in Deaf Pediatrics as a Speech Pathologist while balancing my full-time music career outside of school. This particular Audiologist combined her passion for music with her Communicative Disorder background and created a career for herself as a musician specific Audiologist. She works to monitor musicians’ hearing loss and aid in the protection of their hearing through custom earplugs and close observation. After studying her work, I began contemplating, “Could I be just as creative and find a way to incorporate my personal music passions into my career as well? Was this a possibility I wanted to further explore?” I began considering what options I had within Audiology, Speech and Language Pathology, as well as Psychology. While I am receiving a Psychology undergraduate degree I have never planned on further pursing psychology as my profession. But I have recently realized that I have an innate understanding of people and how the brain and mind work. For years, the people closest to me have sought out my guidance and advice. It’s always seemed very natural for people to talk to me, to trust me, to know I am someone who will listen to them and give them my judgement free
