Applicability for college students – examples from my own life
My life – the friendship of virtue Having a friendship of virtue is rare and precious – and I am grateful that I am fortunate to have one. My best friend and I have known each other since we were four years old. The chemistry between us is very intangible but fiercely strong and resilient, and for 17 years, we have had a mutual exchange of love and choice. It has even survived with being a long-distance friendship for the last five years (we generally talk over Skype for about two hours every other Sunday). My best friend is the only person currently in my life who I can confidently call my friend in an Aristotelian sense of the word. I have other “would-be friends,” some of whom are very close to being true friends, but they have simply not weathered the test of time as my best friend has (119). Usually this person is charismatic, talkative, and intelligent. Other times, they’re the kind of person who instantly lights up the room with their smile. It’s just a pleasurable experience to be around them, although you two do not have a very deep connection and will not keep in touch once you’re no longer in the same situation.
I think a very modern but nonetheless very fitting example of Aristotle’s friendship of pleasure is today’s hookup culture. I know that people have been having relationships throughout history in which the main focus is the exchange of carnal commerce, but today’s hook-up culture has totally accepted an explicit, open, and casual attitude toward sex. Now it is normal to meet someone at a party and to touch lips with them or take them to bed, or even to go to a party, club, or bar with the exact intention of doing partaking in such acts with a stranger or
