Sitting around the table as the sounds of laughter and joy and the smells of home-cooking and sugary goodness wafts throughout the air, the feeling of love and closeness surrounds you. The family is together for that Sunday dinner waiting on the one thing that will tie an awesome weekend together, dessert. What’s for dessert? Why apple pie of course! Nothing screams American family more than apple pie. According to My mother, she cooks apple pies when she wants the family to be together. But why is this? Why is apple pie the pie that represents America? To understand this, one must first understand all the components of apple pie that makes it what it is today. Let’s start with the main ingredient; apples. It is said that apples originated …show more content…
It is credited with being as American as “The Star-Spangled Banner.” In the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, apple pie became a symbol of American prosperity and national pride. A newspaper article published in 1902 declared that "No pie-eating people can be permanently vanquished." The dish was also commemorated in the phrase "for Mom and apple pie" - supposedly the stock answer of American soldiers in World War II, whenever journalists asked why they were going to war. Since then, the apple pie has been praised as a lovely dessert and has been used in poetry to be the comparison to something divine. In the years to come, the recipe has been reimagined by numerous people and enjoyed all the same. The total time to make apple pie from scratch can take up to three hours. According to my mother she uses 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour, 4 teaspoons sugar, 1/4 teaspoon fine salt, 14 tablespoons cold butter, diced, 1 large egg, lightly beaten with 2 tablespoons cold water for the pie crust. For the filling she uses 2 tablespoons freshly squeezed lemon juice, 3 pounds granny smith apples, 2/3 cup sugar, plus more for sprinkling on the pie, 1/4 cup unsalted butter, 1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon, Generous pinch of ground nutmeg, and 1 large egg, lightly beaten. Traditional Dutch apple pie comes in two varieties, a crumb and a lattice style pie. Both recipes are distinct in that they typically call for flavorings of cinnamon and lemon juice to be added and differ in texture, not taste.
