The picture book Apple Pie 4th of July. Written by Janet S. Wong and illustrated by Margret Chodos-Irivine, is a piece of literary work that presents itself with many important themes that any child may, at one point in their early lives, find themselves struggling with. Wong does a very excellent job of trying openly address the issue that is confliction of identity and of having to conform to societal ideals or in our protagonist’s case the idea of what it truly means to be a Chinese-American in America. This is an idea that holds an abundance of relevance in today’s current society and one that has become a present theme within children’s literature. Margaret Chodos-Irivine does this extremely well with including all of the elements needed to bring the story of Apple pie 4th of July to life. Within the first to pages, the audience is presented with a two-page spread that evenly balances text and illustration. This is the very first interaction the audience has with the protagonist. The illustration leaves a very strong impression. The protagonist is located on the right page and placed directly in the center. With only the text, the audience would be unable to holistically identify how the protagonist feels about this. But, Irvine incorporates this into her illustration by surrounding the protagonist in a dark blue color as a background as well as an expressionless protagonist. Having this illustration, the audience is then able to conclude that this is not something that our protagonist is happy about, which then gives them much more insight on our protagonist as a character as well as the progression of the
