Introduction

Apple Inc. is known as the largest tech giant world over for its best quality products like iPhone, iPad, watch, Mac computer and smart TV, etc. Besides 115,000 employees in the US, its suppliers employ more than 1.6 million people in 20 countries. Apple has a set code of conduct to be followed by all its employees as well as suppliers. It helps to keep a balance in the decent workplace to avoid any discrimination based on race, color, ethnicity, age, nationality, sex, disability and membership in a particular group, union or political party, etc.

Working long hours without any break was a major issue in many facilities but according to 2016 annual report, 97% suppliers ' compliance with 60-hour work week was a 5% increase from 2014. Another instance to stop bonded labor which noticed in many Asian facilities, Apple partnered with International Organization for Migration to create a program that educates workers not to pay any recruitment fees to job brokers. Since 2008 onwards, it has resulted over US $25.6 million repayments to employees and in 2015 alone, US $4.7 million were repaid to workers. If a supplier needs extra support to comply with the code of conduct, Apple sends a team of experts as part of its partnership program to help them improve through refining business practices and management systems relating to labor, human rights, environment and health and safety. By working with suppliers instead of only policing them, Apple improved their compliance significantly. Any supplier violation put them on probation until successful completion of next audit. During probation, pending issues monitored carefully, and if Apple believes that the supplier is not committed to change, it terminates the relationship. Until now, Apple discontinued relationship with 18 suppliers due to non-compliance.

Conclusion Apple supplier responsibility standards have become more stringent year after year which shows its commitment to producing the best products in the world. The annual report of 2016 shows 97% compliance by all suppliers worldwide once again proved that Apple deserves to be the best tech company ever. This commitment to social responsibility attracts all stakeholders whether its employees or customers alike towards Apple to continue their partnership in the years to come as it created history by maintaining the highest standard virtually unheard in the high tech industry.
