(A discussion on the main injustices women face)
Who is in control of your life? When posed with this question, many of us would like to think that we are, but that isn’t always the case. There are so many different things that can take control of our life. For women, something that seems to have always taken control is men. Women have been working to gain equality for themselves for decades, and yet even today, we aren’t totally equal. Simon De Beauvoir was one of the most important French intellectuals. Much of her work was philosophical. She taught all around France while also writing novels, memoirs and essays. It was discussed earlier that women were expected to stay at home with the kids and take care of them. If, for a moment, we assumed that women would always do so, does that mean they would be the head of the household? From how society today responds, the answer would be no. In most relationships, men are still considered the head of the household. This is true whether the women stay at home with the child or work to add to the total income. It is rare to see women as the head of the household. Lisa J. Udel discusses some findings in her report, “They had the view that men were the absolute head of the household, and women were submissive to them…complete sexism,” (Udel). Here we understand that Udel is talking about how women completely acknowledged that the man had the control in the relationship. The question of whether or not women should be the head of the household has been raised a number of times. There was a study done looking into the lives of the family when the women were the head of the house. Sylvia A. Douglas converses what resulted from this case, “Children living in female-headed households consume a more diverse diet than those in male-headed households, especially micro nutrient and protein-rich foods that provide the necessary nutrients for the growth and mental development of young children,” (Douglas). From this, the conclusion can be made that, especially for the children, it is better if the women is the head of the household. They do more for the kid, which helps them grow and stay healthy.
