In the article Appearances Are Destructive by. Mark Mathabane the author claims that public school children are more familiar to Nike, Calvin Klein, Adidas, Reebok, and Gucci than Zora Neale Hurston, Shakespeare, and Faulkner. Mathabane states that students are more focused on what’s on their bodies then what’s in their minds. According to the author school children are more focused on what they are wearing than in their minds. I agree with the author on how school children are more focused on what they are wearing than in their minds, because such as, in my years of high school. I would watch students focus more on their appearances then what they could be learning in class. I believe this is true, because school children now only care about appearances, and money students would be better of if they were to care to about academic success, and playing sports. Parents, and faculty members of school district she be more aware of what their children/students, are wearing, and how they are behaving. If done properly students will do better in school and will have a better school environment, because they would not misbehave to their parents, or fellow piers. The author also claims that clothes send out a sexual message, with girls thinking that the only thing that make them attractive to boys are skimpy dresses and gaudy looks, and not intelligence, and academic excellence.
