The way people act on the outside differ from what they feel on the inside. Some people may change to improve themselves to others standards or because they don't feel confident. No matter how much you try to change yourself the truth will always appear. Shakespeare uses the theme of appearance vs reality to develop and hide the darkness and true identity of the characters.
