The truth isn't always clear. “Charles” by Shirley Jackson, illudes the reader completely with characterization and modern writing style. It's a clear example of the literary theme “appearance versus reality”.

Laurie starts his first day of kindergarten then comes home with a story about a kid named Charles who's constantly getting into trouble. These stories about this boy acting up continue for weeks. “Today Charles hit the teacher”, “Charles yelled so loud in school today – [that they had to send him inside]”, “Charles wouldn't do any exercises – he got real fresh - he kicked the teachers friend”; all of these stories worried Laurie's parents. For example, “On Saturday I remarked to my husband, Do you think kindergarten is too unsettling
