Appearance In To Kill A Mockingbird By Harper Lee

One to Five times a week someone I don’t know that well will make some statement on my appearance, whether it's my hair, clothes, body shape or actions, so I smile and laugh and hide who I truly am so people don’t judge me. This happens to people every day and some don’t even realize their hiding to avoid judgement. Although people can choose how they dress and act, they usually don’t dress and act like they want to, because they don’t want to be judged.
People dress and act differently around different types of people. In To Kill a Mockingbird Dolphus Raymond says, “‘Well it’s very simple,’ he said ‘some folks don’t---like the way I live.’... ‘Dolphus Raymond’s in the clutches of whisky--- That’s why he won’t change his ways.’” (Lee 268).

When critic Monroe Freedman said "Finch never attempts to change the racism and sexism that permeates the life of Maycomb” I completely disagree with this point because Atticus Finch defended a black man when no other lawyer in the whole Maycomb county did this ruined Atticus's reputation which shows his determination by fighting for equal rights. I also disagree when you said "never attempts" as this means he didn't try, but during the case Atticus Finch defended a coloured man and try to change the jury’s views on the case. In my opinion, I think that Atticus Finch is a key role model to students because it teaches them not to be racist, sexist and prejudiced.…

Dolphus Raymond is a man who breaks common stereotypes by assuming the pretense and character of one in order to slip under the radar of the other townspeople. While most of Maycomb views him as the drunk that lives with the black people, in reality, Dolphus drinks not alcohol, but merely coca-cola. He confesses this to Scout: “Secretly, Miss Finch, I’m not much of a drinker, but you see they could never, never understand that I live like I do because that’s the way I want to live” (Lee 200-201). This shows that what is most outwardly transparent and unlikable in a character may truly be interesting and good-natured. In Maycomb’s society, white men do not usually associate with colored people, let alone live with them.…

Imagine a wagon with wooden wheels, helping a family move across a valley. The wheels have to endure all of the bumps, rocks, mud, and water, yet a family will not move anywhere unless the wheels are on the wagon. This is similar to the idea of empathy that Harper Lee is trying to emphasize through Atticus. In To Kill A Mockingbird by Harper Lee, she keeps proving through Atticus that even though being truly empathetic toward someone less fortunate than you may bring them down in society, standing up for one another could also make a whole society respect one another.…

Atticus Finch from To Kill A Mockingbird is one of those rare characters who strives to be a static and consistent - and he ultimately fails. His appearance is unextraordinary and he’s nearly completely unchanging, however as we learn about him throughout the story we discover his true essence and how it could never be properly reflected in his appearance. Atticus’ appearance is quite plain, and in all honesty, it’s what you’d expect a lawyer from that era to wear and look like. If you think of the town in which Atticus lives however, you see that how he dresses causes him to stick out as well as alienates him from certain people of Maycomb.…
