Appearance and Reality in Ruta Sepetys’ “Between Shades of Gray”
What is reality? This question has fascinated the human race since the beginning of time, but can never receive a concrete answer. Perhaps it is because humans exist in an artificial society that makes it nearly impossible to see past people’s made up facades. Possibly because the world contains billions and billions of minds that perceive events uniquely and incapable of fathoming anyone else’s reality but their own. Whatever the case might be, it is becoming noticeably more difficult to tell apart the truth from a convincing front. The world is getting increasingly more commercialized, deceptive and self centric. However, this is not a new development in the modern world as

Lina Vilkas lets her emotions spiral so that her biased and uninformed perceptions become concrete. An example of this is when Nikolai was helping her mother and Lina refused because of the unjustified anger she felt towards him; ”Get away from her! Stay away. I hate you. Do you hear me? I HATE YOU!” (Sepetys 298) Lina lets her anger cloud her judgement and stop her from seeing the reality of the situation. Had she let Nikolai help Elena to their jurta, neither mother or daughter would have suffered as much as they did. Another instance where Lina allows her emotions get the best of her is when she takes the file on her family from the kolkhoz office. When she finishes drawing the commander, Lina proceeds to steal the file; ”I turned to pick up my drawing pad. I saw the file on the desk...I grabbed the file and shoved it in my coat.“Yes, let’s go,” I said, rushing through the door. Jonas had no idea what I had done.”(Sepetys 218) Lina lets desire and curiosity overtake her knowing that stealing from the NKVD had dire consequences. Ultimately, her actions could have affected her family or the other Lithuanians severely. She failed to recognize this and took the file for her own personal satisfaction. Lina lets her intense emotions take over her in the moment. This leads to the final reason on why she cannot see reality, which is having no foresight about how her accusations hurt

The realization of what is reality and what isn’t can easily become blurred in literature specifically in the story An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge by Ambrose Bierce, in which a gentleman named Peyton Farquhar is to be hung for a crime against the Confederacy of which he was tricked into committing. The audience is led to believe he escaped the hanging until the final paragraph where that image is smashed to pieces, it is explained to be a figment of his imagination. Ambrose Bierce manipulates the reader into believing the unbelievable through word choice with an appeal to pathos and the shifting point of view throughout his story. The control over the audience demonstrated by Bierce is an extremely difficult skills to employ and he does…

oss Misrepresenting reality can have serious consequences ‘Reality is defined as the state of things as they exist, opposed to the idealistic or notional idea of them’ and is that which remains unchanged through eternity like no other. The idea of indulging oneself in a world of unreal, euphoric fantasies is often an excuse to escape the harsh, daunting nature of reality in this world. More often than not, we skew our lenses and limit our perceptions to that which is beautiful and enthralling to us. We create small, magical worlds of our own that only exhibit the bright, enchanting facets of human life. As we mesmerize in this beauty, we become oblivious to the harsh realities which would have otherwise been recognisable.…

A possible assumption for exploring the idea of 'real' is that it is no longer an object of representation. Documenting the real world is manipulative in a sense where the artist implicitly intends to assert something about the truthful scene, which the audience are expected to form a sense of that aspect or an artist’s intention about that subject. Therefore it questions the framing of reality. Today reality itself is hyperrealistic as the real and the imaginary are indistinguishable for being considered as same collectivity under the name of art. It is impossible to discover an absolute level of aesthetics of the real as everything including the ordinary and everyday reality are conceived as an aesthetic due to the limitless and intangible…

Spiritual Journey For my paper, I will be covering and exploring scientific theories that are then applied to my personal life experiences to form a sort of hybrid story/academic research paper, which I feel suits perfectly my strong character traits of constant hesitation. I will bring to mention my personal philosophies, past/present dependency problems, acute depression, and individual spiritual experiences which were able to defy my understanding of science, and thus exist without empirical explanation. When I think of one’s reality, I try to see things from every angle, yet admittedly do not, but I am confident many others are trapped in this single-viewed paradox. I am not fond of the terms human nature and the potential assumptions…

Greene’s YouTube video highlights and fights against what is real and what is not. His ideas are based on science and nothing more than what the brain is capable to do. Also, what the brain is not able to do and that we also don’t know about. According to him what is real and what is not is based on perception, Greene’s intentions in ‘Perception – The Reality Beyond Matter’ Illustrate a certainty of which path most people want in life and it brings a general idea of a realistic path everyone would enjoy taking.…

The construct of a productive relationship maintains the idea of moving forward. A productive relationship carries the opportunity of improving oneself where, regardless of the difficulty of the means, it will result in a net gain for an individual’s life. In Ha Jin’s short story “Temporary Love” and Angie Chau’s Quiet as They Come, the theme of non productive female sexuality in the characters Lina and Sophia, respectively, calls attention the paradigm of non-productive sexuality because the characters’ purpose for sexual relations result in lack of agency and their voices. The discourse of debt is reductive in productivity of relationships in the way that it eliminates the sense of agency and overall voice.…

Perception is reality that can be characterized in many ways. Another approach to look at it is outstanding individuals or customers make up their minds about an item without very giving it a shot or purchasing it. Their involvement with the item is based solely on what they have heard of the item from others or seen or read in the media. Perception is imperative in promoting and advertising. At the point when purchasers see an item or service that is publicized or showcased to be extremely useful and proficient, odds are they would also benefit from that item or service.…

"Reality is that which, when you stop believing in it, doesn't go away." - Philip K. Dick. Whether you've heard this famous saying or not, it seems to ring true. For example, when you were a child, you were told that Santa Claus is existent and that he's the one that comes down your chimney (if you happen to have one), place presents under your Christmas tree, and bite into the cookies and drink the milk left out for him. So you believed it because you simply suppose "My parents wouldn't lie to me, right?!”…

In Agatha Christie’s The Murder of Roger Ackord, various philosophical themes are present throughout the novel. One theme in particular, reality vs. appearance, plays a vital role in expressing the novel’s main plot line. Reality and appearance or reality vs. appearance addresses how “things might not always be what they seem” and that it is easy to judge things initially based on their first appearance, when in actuality they might be the complete opposite of what we had initially perceived them to be. One of the first instances expressing the reality vs. appearance theme is when Rodger Ackord is discovered murdered by Dr. Sheppard and Ackord’s butler, Parker.…

It is a belief that anything real must be seen, touched, or may even produce some sort of proof. “Science is regarded as a catalog of selected conscious experiences (observations), acknowledged to be scientific and structured by means of concepts and theories (also regarded as conscious experiences).” Referring to the article, Idealist Philosophy: What is Real?, conscious experiences produce thoughts of belief that something is real. Reality is a malleable concept that differs from individual to individual. Due to unique characteristics of personality and differences in how people perceive the world, there is no one definition of an absolute reality. The world around a person can be viewed through any lens the individual pleases. In Sack’s “A Mind’s Eye”, the reader is presented with the various realities of people that have gone blind and how each of them differ in how they choose to approach their blindness. Similarly, in Nafisi’s “Lolita in Tehran”, Nafisi and her students redefined their predicament of living under a totalitarian regime by finding meaning in taking conscious action and embracing their individuality.…
