She could still see herself sitting on the sofa sobbing; feeling like her life had ended. The pain she had felt at the loss of her parents was indescribable. It had been a great blow to her young life. She was all alone in the world, with no brother or sister to relay on. Her parents were the only family she had ever known. She had distant cousins from her mother’s side, which she hardly ever saw. Her grandparents on both sides had been long gone. She was an orphan with no one to lean on, except God.

With DACA’s future uncertain and Trump tightening his policies, many Americans are wondering what is to become of the immigrants in our nation. While some advocate for harsher patrol of the border and deportation, some espouse that focusing primarily on the safety of everyone in the proximity is of utmost importance. In The Devil’s Highway: A True Story (2004), Luis Alberto Urrea, poet and novelist, promotes the latter as he describes the journey of the Wellington 26, which is a group of Mexican immigrants attempting to cross the border. In an excerpt from the chapter “The Long Walk”, the walkers try to find their way out of the desert. As their situation worsens, the author creates a feeling of sorrow over the approaching deaths of more than…

Give examples of how the practice of ministry has affected your experience and understanding of A) God At the core of my understanding of God is a God of love in covenantal relationship with God’s children. Romans 8:38-39 says it well; “For I am convinced that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor rulers, nor things present, nor things to come, nor powers, nor height, nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.” The practice of ministry has only proven to strengthen that belief. I was called early Saturday morning to sit with a family who had just learned of the death of their daughter/granddaughter in a vehicle accident.…

While reading "The Good Daughter", I realized that I could relate to every struggle Caroline faced as a first generation American in a family of immigrants. My parents immigrated to America from Vietnam in the late 70's and built a whole life with nothing but 20 dollars in hand. Having gone through the hardships of moving to a new country that spoke a whole other language, they wanted nothing but the best for me growing up. Their idea of the best ends with me becoming a doctor and having a Vietnamese husband, like Caroline's parents wanted her to become a lawyer and have a Korean husband. Most of the time, immigrant parents tell you that you need become a doctor, lawyer, or politician, to get a job that makes a lot of money, but will never…

Normally we like to think that issues such as being a single parent or deplorable living conditions are only a present day issue. We like to think that things are bad today, but could get better tomorrow; however, most of the problems we have today are problems that people also faced one hundred years ago. If no drastic measures are taken then they will be issues that people will face one hundred years from today. After walking around the Lower East Side and visiting the Tenement Museum I was able further understand the difficulties that immigrants faced one hundred years ago. Present-day immigrants and immigrants from one hundred years ago face the same challenges: low wages, unsanitary and crowded homes, and fear of deportation (for those who entered undocumented).…
