A long time ago at the beginning of time, there was a sun god named Apollo and the ruler of the pantheon of gods, Zeus. Zeus controlled the sky. Apollo was the second in command and challenged Zeus, the leader, to a battle. The stakes of the battle were high. The winner would be the ruler of all the gods and the loser would die. Apollo went up to Zeus and said, “I challenge you to a battle to the death, where the winner shall become the ruler of the gods and the loser will die.” Zeus replied by saying, “Why would you want to challenge me the god of the gods to a battle when there is no way that you will win.” “Because I believe in myself and I am tired of always looking up to you,” replied Apollo. “But I let you be my second in command,” …show more content…

Comparison of the Homeric Hymn to Apollo with Callimachus’ Hymn to Apollo reveals that Callimachus’ myth was composed centuries later. Although a writer may be directly influenced by previous writers’ accounts of the same myth, it is evident that Callimachus was not so influenced by the Homeric Hymn to Apollo in this work. Callimachus’ work’s difference in detail and length, mismatching etiologies, and lack of plot similarities all indicate an absence of a direct connection. Callimachus, an author of a later time, composes a Hymn to Apollo that is quite different from the Homeric version. One of the main differences is the difference in length with Callimachus’ version being substantially shorter.…

While the men were heading back to Ithaca, Zeus sent a massive storm to wreck their ship. Odysseus described this by stating, “Zeus… with thunder and lightning together crashed on our vessel… my men were thrown in the water… and the god took away their homecoming,” (XII: 415-419). This scene is significant because Zeus completely changed the companions’ fate. Instead of letting them sail back home safely and reunite with their families as they planned to, Zeus broke apart their ship and let the men drown. However, this scene is also significant because Odysseus was able to use his godlike strength to change the fate the gods planned for him.…
