Said by Gene Kranz on the movi Apollo 13, the ‘Failure is not an option’ phrase has been used by various action movies as a cliché which shows authority and badassery. Every character on this kind of movie says that failing on their specific job (or mission, if you really want to be that badass) is not what they are expecting. Fail this mission and you don’t exist on our lives, that’s it.
When it comes to our work, failing is the least thing that we want to happen. As much as possible, we want everything to come out smooth. No disturbance. No distractions. No failures. Just success. I remember my grade school teacher scolding me for being very perfectionist when I was a tyke. It was music class and I was grouped with a boy who clearly doesn’t have the “voice”. So before we could even have our first group, I already exclaimed that we won’t succeed because of this boy. I told my group members that he should just stick to the props and leave the singing to us. But he insisted, so we kinda messed up. In the end, it was me who kept blaming. This is the time when my teacher entered the conversaion.
“Ronnie, you have to realize that failing is not something to avoid. Failing means respecting your own limitations. Failing means facing the fact that you are a human.”
Of course, I was just a kid back there, so I didn’t actually understand that part. That is when she started saying this.
“In reality, the real winners are the one who loses. Experience is more valuable than gold.”
And who knew that she’s right. Experience is definitely better than instant gratification.
