Only the third intended mission to the moon and it wouldn’t quite make it. On April 13, 1970 two days after flight Apollo 13 lifted off something went wrong. The three men, Jim Lovell, Jack Swigert, and Fred Haise trained as any other astronaut would, but what happened was unpredictable. The three men had just finished a broadcast to the citizens back home without many people joined watching. It was 56 hours into the mission where a cryo-stir had occurred this caused Oxygen tank 2 in the service module to explode while the astronauts were miles from earth. Many people back at home and on the ship did not know what had occurred, but what was important to them was how to get home. The chances of survival were slim on Flight …show more content…
“The ‘caution and warning’ display panel lit up like a christmas tree-- each new glow on the grid meant that another critical system was in trouble” (Bizony). The astronauts did not expect so many problems, there were more bad things happening than good. Apollo 13 was now just adrift in space with little to no control, but the astronauts had no clue why. Their first biggest conflict the astronauts ran into was that they would soon run out of air to breathe. Control from earth tried their best to stop the loss of oxygen and power. This did not go as expected so about an hour and a half after the accident Mission Control Center contacted the crew about using the lunar module as a way home. An idea like this was studied for years and showed advancements (Williams). The service module was not powering back up and they knew they needed the other consumables that were stored in the Lunar module, Aquarius, for these type of situations. All things considered one of the most crucial things were the communications between Mission Control and the astronauts. Mission control seemed to have many advantages in the accident, and Apollo 13 may not have made it home without them. Mission control attempted to devise a plan for them to make it home safely; there were many options that were occurring and so many problems occurring as well. Mission control had a huge advantage that they could see things in a different view. They also had more information about Apollo’s manufacturing and they thoroughly knew the foundation of them. From here on it was all problem solving which in the first few hours they accomplished very
