It was April 13th, 1970, the three astronauts only needed one more day to get started with their mission. Everything seemed as normal as a baby crying when it’s born, that was until there was a loud bang that made the spacecraft moan and shudder! At first, the three astronauts came to the conclusion that a meteor had hit them. What had actually happened was that when they were doing the routine task to turn …show more content…
Unfortunately, when the astronauts and the engineers were trying to achieve their new goal, they were faced with difficult challenges. First of all, the LEM didn’t have enough power or water to last four days. The men were shivering because they had to turn off all systems but the most critical ones. They were freezing like if they were in the North Pole with no jackets on. Every once in awhile, the spacecraft would start drifting off course, and the air in the LEM became toxic! In the article it says, “The astronauts had barely settled into the LEM when a new problem cropped up. The journey home would take four days, but the LEM didn’t have enough power or water to last that long. So the astronauts turned off all but the most critical systems, including the heat. Outside, the temperature was 280 degrees below zero. Soon the men were shivering. But the cold was the least of their worries. Every minute, it seemed, new problems arose. The ship kept drifting off course. The LEM’s air filters stopped working, and the air became toxic with CO2, the gas humans exhale with every breath. With many systems damaged or powered down, the engineers had to use their ingenuity to find creative solutions.” This quote reveals that they stayed humbled and calm and were able to overcome their
