Aphrodite: Greek Goddess of Love, Desire, and Beauty
Have you ever wished to have the power of love? Maybe desire? Or maybe even beauty? Well there was one greek goddess that had the power of all three of them. The goddess that held these powers was known as Aphrodite. In the life of today we look at Aphrodite as the goddess of love, desire, and beauty, but in ancient Greece she was an Olympian who was honored on many other occasions for a great assortment of reasons. Her powers carried weight in the many domains of love, safekeeping, desire, and war. She helped people fall in love. She could even help people fall in love again. After Titan Cronus killed Uranus he threw his genitals into the sea. Once the sea of foam and Uranus’s genitals formed together, it made Aphrodite (Aphrodite Facts). Many might think that Uranus was the father of Aphrodite since she was formed from his genitals. Aphrodite was not the daughter of Uranus just because she was formed from his genitals. Really her father is Zeus, god of the sky, and her mother is Dione, the Titan goddess (theoi). Aphrodite had a couple names people called her. Her name is the origin of aphrodisiac. She had a Roman name which was Venus, and that was the origin of venereal. Aphrodite had many symbols. Symbols such as a swan, dove, apple, roses, mirror, and scallop shell. Aphrodite was referred to the “Lady of Cyprus.” She was also called Cytherea, Acidalia, and Cergio. Her duty was to be beautiful. Aphrodite had a lot of male partners throughout her life. Many included Phaeton, Phaon, Butes, Anchises, Nerites, Arei, Dionysus, Hermes, Poseidon, and Adonis. Along with the many male partners in her life she also had many children. Her children included Eros, Aeneas, Phobos, Deimos, Eunomia, Harmonia, Eyre, Pothos, Rhode, and many more. She won a beauty contest against Athena and Hera (Aphrodite Facts). The son of Troy chose the winner for the beauty contest, and he chose Aphrodite. During the Trojan War, Aphrodite sided with Paris and Aeneas (theoi). Aphrodite winning the beauty contest was supposedly the reason of why the Trojan War
