Aphorism In Tuesdays With Morrie

Great Essays
Let me start off by defining what an aphorism is, an aphorism is a true statement intended to share a universal truth (Google.com). In Tuesdays With Morrie, Morrie was a professor who was diagnosed with ALS. This is a terminal disease that attacks a person 's nervous system, slowly making parts of the victim 's body inoperable. While he is dying, an old student of his, Mitch, visits Morrie every Tuesday. Morrie shares a lot of aphorisms with him that taught Mitch Albom, and myself, how to live a better life. In this story there was one aphorism in particular that stuck out to me, it said “Accept the past as past, without denying it or discarding it,” (Albom 7). This one really made me think, so I wanted to find another aphorism to share that …show more content…
My next aphorism also relates to my sport life, as well as the everyday aspects of my life. I am fifteen and have played sports for as long as I remember. I always push myself to be better in sports. I also push myself to do the best that I can in school. The aphorism that I chose is probably used by every coach in every sport in the world, it is “Winners never quit and quitters never win,"(Topalian, Mike). I have heard this quote spoken at least once in some way by all of my coaches. This aphorism means that if you want to win/succeed at something, then you can never give up, you must give 100% all the time and, if you do give up then you will end up failing. One of the most memorable times that I have heard this quote was during the same soccer game in the previous example, during senior night. It was halftime and we were losing by a couple of goals at this point. Our coach brought us together at the half and told us this aphorism. This really got us pumped up because we remembered all of the hard work that we had put into practice and we knew that if we did all that we learned and played 100% then we had a chance to win or at least tie. We were also pumped because we were reminded that it would be the last home game for our seniors and we wanted to give our all for them and wanted to win this game for them. We came out strong the next half and played our hearts out, we never gave up. We ended up catching …show more content…
More specifically, I feel that it relates to the work that people have to do throughout life. For example, it can relate to the work in school. If you want to do good on it and get a good grade, then you must give it your all, you cannot give up or quit halfway through. Like for this paper, if I want a good grade on it, then I must do my best throughout the entire paper. I cannot write a good beginning of the paper and then think that will be good enough and rush through the end. That would be like quitting, and if I did that then I would fail and get a bad grade. Another example of giving it your all for work has to do with finals. In order to pass these you have to have given it your all throughout the entire year and not just a couple of classes. If you haven 't then there will surely be things on the test that you don 't know or don 't remember. If this is the case then you will have to give it your all in studying. You cannot give up halfway through because you are tired and frustrated, you must study until you know everything so you pass. So for all of your school work and just work in general, you have to do your best for the entire duration of the work. If not, then you will end up

An aphorism is a phrase describing a general truth. The main example in this article is a quote from Winston Churchill. Burke includes the quote, “”Courage,” Winston Churchill said, “is the first of human qualities because it is the quality that guarantees all the others” (Burke), to help shift the article from the narration of the 9/11 attack to the more persuasive part of the article. The quote also sums up all the firemen of 9/11 as courageous because of all they did. By including this quote, the author is using it to describe the firemen that were present at 9/11.…

In the story ´´The Marble Champ,´´ by Gary Soto, Lupe, the protagonist, is a shy girl and is not good at sports but is a straight -A- student. The story shows that she is a very hard worker because she sacrifices her own time to practice, tries her best, and she is determined to be good at sports.…

Creating Free Will and Individuality in an Oppressive Society In the excerpt titled “The Soul of an Individualist” from Ayn Rand’s novel The Fountainhead she writes, “Throughout the centuries there were men who took first steps down new roads armed with nothing but their own vision. The great creators — the thinkers, the artists, the scientists, the inventors — stood alone against the men of their time.” She also mentions these individual creators got nothing but hate in response for their miraculous inventions. The same is true for the protagonist, Equality 7-2521, in Rand’s novella Anthem; he struggles to show his individuality in his society’s collectivist government.…

“Sacrifices have to be made” Acts Of Sacrifice By: Lars Jorgensen In Things Fall Apart by Chinua Achebe our main character Okonkwo is constantly facing sacrifices that must be made to improve the lives of his people and himself. Taking a man's life in order to not look weak is not the true meaning of sacrifice, its giving apart of you to the world around you for a benefit for you or your peers. Everyone has responsibilities that have to be carried or else some sort of consequence will occur sooner or later, and with those responsibilities come sacrifices. For example maybe you have a essay due at 11:59 but you really want to go out with your friends to hangout, so therefore you have to make a sacrifice either go hangout with your friends and get a bad grade or turn it in and get a good grade, so therefore you have to see what you”ll gain or lose from the outcome of…
