Audience: I choose this aphorism with my coworker Johnathan in mind.
Reason:
1. Johnathan and I both work a restaurant called PDQ not far from South Alabama. We get along outside work since we have common interests in music, movies and games, but we differ in our work ethic.
2. I happen to be the one who trained him, so I take it personally when he is criticized. I hope in discussing this aphorism in the paper I can come up with ways to continuously give him advise on how to look busy and to look good. It only works if people do not know of it or if people have not caught on. The saying goes if I half-ass a task before I am asked, I will pass. It is similar to Emerson’s aphorism in that if I show initiative and enthusiasm with my work I am less likely to be criticized on something I did not need to do. If I waited until I am told, I would be scrutinized more harshly, at the same time no one will complain about a volunteered job. Through showing ambition, initiative and enthusiasm, my peers see me as a hard worker, my managers see me as a trustworthy employee and my customers look for me when they come
