Improved Essays
Have you ever had a child and the nurses or doctor perform a health check on the baby? That health check is called the Apgar Score. The Apgar Score was created by Virginia Apgar, who lived 1909 to 1974. The Apgar Score has saved countless lives. The Virginia Apgar created a quick health check that happens the first minute after birth and the fifth minute after birth. It allows the doctor know if the newborn needs medical attention. Apgar was also the first female professor.
Virginia Apgar Developed the Apgar Score. The Apgar Score is a test that tests a newborn baby's health. According to Medlineplus, “Apgar is a quick test performed on a baby at 1 and 5 minutes after birth. The 1-minute score determines how well the baby tolerated the birthing

The Apgar Score tests the baby’s breathing effort, heart rate, muscle tone reflexes, and skin color to see how healthy the baby is after the first and fifth minute. The Apgar Score is scored out of 10 and each category is scored out of 2. If the baby is not breathing the score for breathing effort is 0. If the baby has slow or irregular breathing the score would be a 1. If the baby has regular breathing patterns or crying hard the score would be a 2. If there is no heart rate the baby gets a 0 for heart rate. If the baby’s heart rate is less than 100 beats per minute (bpm) the score is a 1. If the baby has a heart rate greater than 100 bpm the baby scores a 2 in heart rate. If the muscle tone is loose the baby scores a 0 for muscle tone. If there is some muscle tone the baby scores a 1. If there is active motion the newborn scores a 3. The next category is the newborn’s reflexes. If the baby has no reaction the baby scores a 0 in this category. If the baby scores a 1 it is because the baby has a reaction. If the baby scores 2 it means that the baby has a reaction and coughs, sneezes, or cries. If the skin color is pale blue the baby scores a 0 in the skin color category. If the skin is pink with some blue the baby scores a 1. If the skin is pink the baby scores a 2. A normal overall score is 7, 8, or 9. This means that the baby is in good health. If the score less than 7 the newborn needs

Pharmaceuticals such as antihyperglycemic medications may also be an option to keep blood sugar levels on track. Oral antidiabetic agent metformin and glyburide have shown efficacy with no evidence of harm to the foetus, although long-term safety remains a concern (28.) When comparing to two, metformin was a 2.1 times higher failure rate than glyburide. Metformin works by decreasing the amount of glucose the liver makes, keeping blood sugar levels low and boosting insulin response. Although metformin does cross the placenta and enter the baby’s bloodstream, the amount is small. Studies have not found evidence to suggest that metformin harms the fetus.…

The information I received informed me that Jackson College is now offering an American Honors program. As we know, college expenses are increasing as the years go by. This program makes a 4-year, bachelor’s degree affordable to those who may not be able to afford it. The American Honors program is a program offered to students at Jackson College.…

Race Issues in Standard Testing in High Schools in the USA In the United States, there have concerns that the standardized tests favor some groups of people including whites and Asians while undermining others races such as African-Americans and Hispanics. The latest filed complaint with the United state education department regarding standardized tests in high schools in New York pointed that black and Hispanic students had a low average score in comparison with that of whites and Asians. The report cited the cause of this as the low number of Latino and black students being enrolled in leading public schools in comparison with the Caucasian group. If the claims by that complaint are something to go by, then there is clears violation of civil…

The head to toe assessment serves as a foundation to nursing, providing insight into a patient's mental, physical, and social health. This assessment allows a nurse to gather information on his or her patient, while instigating a honest and trusting patient-provider relationship. During my video validation this week, it sanctioned me to demonstrate my health assessment skills, while acquiring exerperience. The cue identifier for my head to toe assessment stood as gas exchange/patient cough, which required a focused pulmonary assessment. Overall, I would state that the assessment went well, but I could definently improve my skills.…

    Lower Grade Point Average

Gym Grades should not impact your grade point average. It is highly unjust for the grades a student receives in physical education to make an impact (more so a deficient one) on their grade point average because it is not fair to the students that do well in all of their other classes besides gym to earn a lowered grade point average because of a class that only seems to be measuring your intelligence off of how competently you can participate in physical activity. There are a number of other reasons why it is not fair, one of them is that some children don’t participate in gym because it makes them feel uncomfortable. It is not fair to those that feel like they physically cannot participate, or legitimately cannot participate to receive a lowered grade even if it is based off of effort. One of my main reasons I believe that a lowered grade point average ensuing from a substandard grade in physical education is…

When I first learned that I would have to complete multiple IAT tests, I automatically had an idea of what I thought my scores were going to be for each test. For all of the tests, I assumed that I would receive a score of moderate preference. I especially assumed that I would receive a score of moderate preference on the Race IAT test because that was the score that I had received when I took the same test last year. Turns out, I received a moderate preference score on the Gender- Career and Age IAT tests, and a strong preference score on the Race, and Disability IAT tests. I think when I first found out that I had received a score of strong preference on the Race and Disability IAT tests I was at first very shocked and confused about…
