The Apgar score is a quick test performed on a baby after 1-5 minuets of the time they are born. The 1 minuet score determined how well the baby tolerated the birthing process. The 5 minuet score shows the doctor how well the baby is handling itself outside of the mothers womb. The doctor, midwife or the nurse performs the test. They check 5 things that are the breathing effort, heart rate, muscle tone, reflexes and the skin color. Each category gets scored with a 0, 1 or 2 depending the condition that is observed. If the baby is not breathing then the breathing effort gets a score of 0. The better the baby is doing they get a higher score but if the baby is doing bad, then it gets a lower score.
