The Texas FFA places many requirements on the manuscripts submitted for contests, for example requiring all manuscripts to use APA for style and references. If students do not use APA formatting or execute it effectively they will loose points or receive no points for that section of the grading. While the qualifying contests in the FFA require that students use APA formatting, many open public speaking contests require MLA formatting when registering manuscripts. Talking with many of my friends who did not participate in public speaking, it is clear that some of them do not really understand the difference between APA and MLA formatting, while I am able to change at the drop of hat the formatting of my paper. Additionally, when public speaking there is a strong emphasis placed on professional opinions and outside sources being presented in the speech. I remember in some of my own speeches I would spend weeks just digging up quotes, research studies, and opinions of political figures to weave into my speeches. I started competitive public speaking in the seventh grade, but wrote my first research paper my junior year of high school. It was writing manuscripts for public speaking that taught me how to research beyond Wikipedia and format citations long before English class did. Yet, even though the format varies slightly between speech writing and strictly academic writing, public speaking gave so many others and me the confidence to conduct and cite research
