One of my main concerns about this class is the APA style reference format; due to APA style never being instructed to me. My former class work and experiences have always consisted of using the MLA style which is what I am comfortable using. I have not used the MLA style in some time but I remember enough about it to use the style again. The last time I had to use the MLA reference style was my high school English class and a college level composition

In the novel “My Antonia” by Willa Cather, it is debatable whether characters Jim or Antonia learned more throughout their relationship. Personally, I believe that Jim learned more throughout their relationship. Considering that Jim is the narrator of the story, we get to see his inner thoughts, and never have confirmation of Antonia’s feelings, we just know what Jim thinks she has learned. Most first-person narrators can be considered unreliable, because we will never be certain on the feelings and thoughts of other characters. We are experiencing Jim’s story in the novel.…

MLA format was expected to be known through all my past classes and I’ve been so accustomed to using it, I didn’t expect to be surprised reading through Purdue Owl. On the contrary, I did learn a few interesting things that I haven’t been implementing when formatting my essays. When citing my sources, usually my main focus would be the Works Cited page, however the in-text citations have equal importance. Often times, I would save my citations for last, causing me to miss a few points that were maybe hidden, for example a paraphrase rather than an obvious quote. Purdue Owl broke down every element to how to properly cite an essay which was a great refresher.…

A wise man by the name of Mortimer Alder once said, “The purpose of learning is growth, and our minds, unlike our bodies, can continue growing as we continue to live.” We never outgrow the ability to learn, so we should continue to strive to learn something new daily. During the past semester while taking Composition II, I learned a myriad of things that are going to help me in my future such as how to properly cite in MLA format, how to not plagiarize, and how to become more organized. Before this class, I never knew the right way to write MLA format papers or cite. However, during this class I learned what information needed to be included in the citations as well as the format the citation had to be in.…

Pro Point Two, by having set standards on format, students are able to learns skills such implementing citations and research into their writing. The Texas FFA places many requirements on the manuscripts submitted for contests, for example requiring all manuscripts to use APA for style and references. If students do not use APA formatting or execute it effectively they will loose points or receive no points for that section of the grading. While the qualifying contests in the FFA require that students use APA formatting, many open public speaking contests require MLA formatting when registering manuscripts. This leads to the most competitive students in the public speaking circle either writing multiple versions of their speeches with appropriate formatting or, as I did, constantly revising the…

English 1105 has been an important learning experience for me and my writing processes. After a response paper, discussion boards, and formal essays, my writing style and process has changed drastically from how it was prior to this class. Each assignment that was required has shaped me as a writer. The response paper helped me to analyze the content of an argumentative work and put into words how I felt about each aspect. Although not time consuming assignments, the discussion boards have provided opportunities to discuss issues with classmates openly and argumentatively.…

In writing my initial response regarding APA formatting I didn't consider the history of scholarly writing, how APA formatting created a standardized format for scholarly writing, and how the uniformity achieved from APA formatting benefits the reader. I also liked your point regarding how APA formatting allows a writer to responsibly use information found in other sources.…

I had no idea what APA format was or how to cite properly. However, the APA citations links that my professor provided were very useful and helped me be successful with the rest of my essays. The videos guided me step by step and were very simple to understand other different type of formats such as MLA, and Chicago. Another resource that was very helpful, were the online class discussions. Online discussions not only helped me interact with my classmates, but helped me broaden my knowledge about the material.…

Well, I consider myself to be a decent writer, even though writing is not my strong point. Therefore, as I have come to the completion of my degree, I have learned numerous writing skills along the way. At times I get confused on the formats as I consider them to be similar in some ways. Furthermore, they differ and each has its own different style of quoting and citation in articles, books, phrases, etc.…
