Slavery during the Classical and Ancient world was viewed very widely among places. Many civilizations like Greece, Egypt and Rome liked slaves while other civilizations like China were not as favorable towards slavery. In many civilizations, there were two ways you would become a slave. The first one was being born a slave and the second one was being defeated in a war. Being a slave was very hard and many did not make it. Contextualization Many laws and civilizations made it clear they were for or against slavery. For example, in the Laws of Manu, Aristotle's teachings, Mayans, New Kingdom art, Gaius, and the code of Hammurabi all depicted their support of slavery. Docs 1, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8). To start off, the Laws of Manu show very clearly their support of slavery. In the Laws of Manu, it says there were slaves of all kinds. This shows how much they needed slaves because they had different ones for different needs. (Doc 1) However, it is not backed up with a lot of support considering the time of origin is unknown. So it is not really known if this document is authentic or not. Doc 1 Pov. -. Aristotle also shows his support for slaves. He said that slaves are meant to work, be punished, and eat food. (Doc 4) The art of Thutmose III shows his support of slavery. It is shown by the fact that he is at a slave market, showing his interest in owning slaves. (Doc 5) In Mayan civilization the art depicted shows their support of slavery. The picture shows Motul de San Jose with his courtiers. A courtier is basically a king's slave. By the king having so many it shows their civilizations support of slaves. Doc 6) Gaius made a whole page of laws related to slaves. Most say that a slave is a slave and can’t change.
