Because of the difference in leadership, there were different societal impacts. In North America, the influence of the Europeans, specifically British, was heavy because they controlled the majority of the territory. Because of this, colonists had the desire to be seen as superior and represent Britain. They, as a society, strived to be unified and be equal. There was minimal discrimination against each other but much against the Native Americans and the slaves. However, in Latin America and the Caribbean, this was not the case. Latin America and the Caribbean were ruled mostly by the Spanish and also by the Portuguese. Because the Spanish ideology was to separate those in power, there was discrimination between the populations. There was the social elite, spanish descendents, and those of mixed race (most commonly known as mestizo). The effects of racial ideologies has made a long-term impact on the societies of North and Latin Americas and the Caribbean . There is still a feeling of racial supremacy in both
