To memorialize events or people, a group or agency must consider the size and materials of the monument. The size determines whether the person or event is receiving the right amount of credit and remembrance. When it was decided that a Holocaust museum would be built on The Mall in Washington, D.C., the Commission of Fine Arts disapproved it because the design was too large (Source E). They believed that it would take away the sole purpose of the museum, which was to commemorate the victims and survivors of the Holocaust and to not “overpower The Mall or its visitors” (E). It would be unfair to the other memorials and monuments in The Mall, so Albert Abraham decreased the size of the design to make it work. Additionally, the material of a monument is crucial to create an efficient commemoration. When Maya Lin crafted the Vietnam Veterans Memorial, she wanted a black granite surface to make it “reflective and peaceful” (Source G). She was interested in a mirrored effect because not only would it double the size of the park, it also creates an interface, between reality and the “quieter, darker, more peaceful world beyond” (G). With her choice of material of the memorial, Lin was able to unify the nation’s past and present. The size and material of a monument is substantial in creating the proper sense of remembrance. After determining the size and material of the monument, the location must be considered as well. …show more content…
When Maya Lin was designing her memorial in Washington, D.C., she wanted to build it in a park but didn’t want to interfere with nature by destroying the park. So she cooperated with the surrounding environment by designing her memorial that would work with the land, not to “fight or dominate it” (Source G). Protesters also opposed the location of the Holocaust museum when it was first publicized that it would be built in the United States because they “did little to stop the Holocaust from occurring” (Source E). People felt offended and didn’t think it was the appropriate location for the museum since it may cause further anti-Semitism. Furthermore, the monument of Christopher Columbus in Riverside Park in Easton, Pennsylvania creates a peaceful setting (Source B). As people stroll through the park and see the monument, they would remember the impact Columbus had in history and how inspiring he was. The monument of Columbus would not be viewed as something meant to memorialize him if it was placed near a dumpster or an asylum. The location of a monument is essential to successfully memorialize a person or an event. When constructing a monument, there must be a message behind it. In South Dakota, the Crazy Horse, also known as the great Sioux leader, was structured with a “broad chest, and flowing hair, his outstretched arm” can help you visualize how courageous this piece was (Source C). Also, sculpting the monument with “his long arm pointing out over his beloved Black Hills” illustrates the many achievements
