Throughout civilization, man has revolted against authority. In ancient Rome, slaves rebelled against their owners. For example, Spartacus led a slave army that took eight Roman legions to quell. Rebellion happens when people want to change aspects of authority; they want to modify inequitable laws, to reduce heavy taxes, and to improve their lives. Rebellions can tranform a society view by believing that laws unjust, issuing challenges against authority, and reforming to create betterment for society. When rebellions transpire, society is convinced that the laws are bias. This is demonstrated in Antigone when Creon decides to free Antigone and bury Polynices as the senators advised Creon “Set free the maiden from the vault, and build a tomb for that dead outcast”. This exhibits Creon accepting the divine law of burial. He has made compromise against divine authority and not letting the neighboring cities to despise Thebes. Good leaders compromise with society. Without compromise, the state or government can be overthrown. Compromising the unjust laws helps a ruler to stay in his power as Creon still was king. Creon’s decision is analogous to the Civil Rights Movement. According to Malcolm X, a solution to the inequality of American society is to forget skin color as he said ‘“whether we are Christians or Muslims or nationalists or agnostics or atheists, we must first learn to forget our differences”’ (Document D). No matter what type of skin color or beliefs people have, everyone belongs almost to the same biological race of human being. Forgetting differences is crucial in the settlement between authorities and discontent citizens. The American government disregarded differences and passed amendments to the Constitution to give blacks freedom. The American government banned Jim Crow laws and made it illegal to discriminate a person based on differences. For women rights, the American Government allowed women to vote and have as much freedom as every man. As women protest across the nation, American government add the Nineteenth Amendment to give women voting rights. This illustrate a government for the people. The government is willing to do whatever it can to fulfill the need of its citizens. The women would probably attack men if there was not an adjustment to the Constitution.
