South Africa South Africa is located south of the equator in the southern hemisphere, its absolute location is 30 degrees South and 25 degrees East. South Africa is bordered by Lesotho, Zimbabwe, and Swaziland, as well as the Atlantic and Indian oceans. Diversity is a huge feature in South Africa because it has about 11 official languages as well as many different cultures and ethnic groups. South Africa has one of the continent's largest economies, and also is the only country in Africa with 3 capital cities, Pretoria, Bloemfontein, and Cape Town which is South Africa’s most populous city. Precious metals and base metals have been leading exports; agricultural goods and military equipment play an important role as well. The country’s major imports are chemicals, chemical products, and motor vehicles (“South Africa”). About 75 percent of South Africa’s population is black and about 14 percent is white, yet the white minority ruled South Africa for over a century. Whites would force blacks into areas called Homelands. The homelands were made to stop the blacks from moving into the cities in South Africa. Whites also created a system of laws called apartheid, where blacks were segregated from the whites. As a leader of the ANC (African National Congress) Nelson Mandela negotiated with the white government on behalf of the black South Africans. HIV or AIDS is an immunodeficiency virus which currently has no cure. It damages your immune system and interferes with your bodies ability to fight the organisms which cause disease. This can be very dangerous because it destroys white blood cells which are a very important to the human body. “HIV/AIDS in South Africa is a prominent health concern; South Africa has the highest prevalence of HIV/AIDS compared to any other country in the world with 5.6 million people living with HIV, and 270,000 HIV recorded deaths in 2011” (HIV/AIDS Basics…). Limited access to clinics means that most will become seriously sick before getting access to treatment. HIV/AIDS is affecting many people because once someone gets infected, they stop working and others stop working in order to help them, which affects the income of most people, putting many in debt for lack of income.
