Ap Seminar Reflection

Throughout the course of the year, AP Seminar has helped me develop many ways, not only as a thinker, but also as a researcher, presenter, writer and collaborator. I have learned how to scuba dive into topics rather than just jet ski over them, and I have also learned how to navigate the plane of the AP College Board toward the topics I chose to address in my various research papers and presentations. Overall, AP Seminar and Mrs. Coleman have helped me develop new skills not only as a student, but skills that will remain with me throughout my course of adulthood.

As a thinker, I am usually very scatter brained. Normally my brain is moving faster than my hands can write, and faster than my lips can speak. Often times, it is difficult for someone to follow what I am saying because I move so quickly from topic to topic, and often times switch back to a previous idea halfway through the conversation. AP Seminar has taught me the idea of being the Tarmac instructor, pointing your audience towards your main argument, thus strengthening your point. This has helped me not only in my writing, but in my thinking process, because it has helped me

I am often times a very interpretive, metaphorical writer, which makes informative writing a challenge for me. AP Seminar has helped me to find a balance between looking at broader subject matter, and narrowing it down to a specific idea. This idea also carried through into my research. I learned the importance of having a research question, not just going into an essay or topic blindly. Also, AP Seminar has helped me develop ways to become a less biased writer by forcing me to examine questions and problems through a variety of lenses. Together, AP Seminar has given me the ability to become a more effective informative writer, while also presenting me with skills to become less biased and effective when

Session five was a big stepping stone for me, I believe I asked questions that guided her and properly validated her feelings, not to mention my powerful use of silence during the whole session. This reflection will shift gears from how I originally lay out my reflections. I usually express the goals I said I would work on and then share the progress I made during the succeeding session. However, I shared my uncertainty about where to take our session after the last one. I believe this doubt helped session five unfold the way it did.…

When I began this class I was sure I knew how to write a paper and make it sound like I knew what I was talking about. Upon completion of my first essay I discovered just how wrong I was. While there were a minimal amount of errors, the errors present made my essay sound as if it had been written by a child. Throughout this course, writing took more than just writing about what you read. Here I learned to process all the information that needs to be processed and come up with some way to get it out on paper. With writing I have learned that vocabulary and grammar are two very affective sides to it. With grammar I have learned when to end a sentence. Working on grammar for my writing also allowed me to learn, when the time came for me to use punctuation and extend the sentence.…

The most challenging yet rewarding class I have taken in high school was AP Psychology. This course consistently challenged my way of thinking and constantly drove me to ask questions about the human mind and behavior. I found myself searching for ways to apply the concepts discussed in class to my everyday life. In many ways, this was my favorite part about this class. Psychology is used to explain why thirty minute naps are better than two hour naps, and why studying over time helps with memory and information retention.…

As a freshman, in 2014, I attended the first few technique courses clueless about adapting to them and writing collegiate papers. Coming from a background of mainly jazz and tap, I knew I would face challenges while learning modern and ballet techniques. One of the many challenges I faced was learning to take advantage of my kinesphere. During each modern class, I was encouraged to dance bigger and really reach out in order for my movement to expand. Even though I found it to be a challenge, I was not aware of how large I could move, until I pushed myself.…

Before this class, there are some writing elements that I had not considered using before. One of them being the audience. I never reflected upon the audience’s perspective. This helped me realize that for some instances, I do not give enough detail or I am too broad. Making a clear argument is important to an individual’s paper, and I learned that this can be done with checking to make sure the evidence as well as my explanation makes sense.…

Learning different modes of writing and putting them into practice will allow me to be able to approach different subjects with an appropriate style. Although I had learned to use only academically credible sources before, I had become too lax and this class put me back on the right track of being aware. I have only done papers in APA format for the past two years, so this class was a nice refresher on MLA format. I think it’s important to be fluent in both; while in college you never know if different teachers will require a different format than others. Beyond improving my writing ability, this class achieved its critical thinking development goal as well.…
