The three sample pieces I chose to include in my portfolio are an argumentative English essay, a book report written for an AP science class, and a lab report. These pieces illustrate my proficiency in multiple subject areas including research and argumentation. The first piece presented in my portfolio is an argumentative essay written for my AP Language and Composition course. The given essay, written by Edward O. Wilson, and AP prompt were taken from the 2009 AP Language exam, found on the College Board website. The prompt instructed students to “write an essay in which you analyze how Wilson’s use of satire illustrates the unproductive nature of such discussions.” Analytical arguments are based upon examination of the author’s use of rhetorical

This lab report was included with the aforementioned book report as part of my final project for the class. I was instructed to perform a scientific study of my own and complete a lab report to present my research and findings. Although my experiment was simple, I gathered background information from the internet and from my textbook in order to generate a hypothesis and also to show why the findings of my experiment are applicable in the real world. Providing background research was necessary for my lab report because it is intended that anyone, regardless of their level of prior knowledge of environmental processes, will fully understand the hypothesis, procedures, analysis, and conclusion of the lab. Although writing my report did not give me the opportunity to fully demonstrate my personal writing style, it is important for me to include a piece in my portfolio that shows I am capable of writing scientific papers. Not only will I take numerous science classes in college for my major, but I will also perform personal research as part of my requirements for the Honors Program at NCSU. I have learned how to write professional lab reports through my AP classes in high school, and plan to continue to learn and gain experience writing scientific papers throughout my
