More specifically, Donald’s daily worry that prevented him from getting restful sleep, being able to relax, and caused consistent fatigue and physical ailments was most likely general anxiety disorder. According to the American Psychological Association’s (2013) Diagnostic and Statistical Manual for Mental Disorders-Fifth Edition general anxiety disorder can be characterized by a disproportionate amounts of worry that has lasted longer than at least six months, inability to regulate the anxiety, inability to relax, physical problems such as body aches, and sleep issues such as problems getting to sleep and/or staying asleep. To diagnose an individual with general anxiety disorder, significant impairment to daily life must be present (APA, 2013). This diagnosis applies to Donald because he displayed daily anxiety about his family, his health, and his career. The anxiety has been present for almost 30 years. He was unable to get enough sleep because the anxiety keeps him awake. Muscle aches were described. He was frequently worried about whether or not his coworkers like him for a long time. He has avoided moving up the corporate ladder to avoid stress and stays with what he knows. The APA (2013) recognized social anxiety to be characterized by unreasonable anxiety in situations where individuals feels judged by others, fears their poor responses would be judged harshly by others, enacts avoidance behaviors to prevent possible humiliating circumstances. Furthermore, the anxiety is constant, long-lasting, and highly excessive (APA, 2013). In Donald’s case, this diagnosis would most likely be ruled out as he was not described as being anxious about being judged by his coworkers nor are enough symptoms present that can be considered separate from general anxiety
