In case 5.1 we are presented with Maggie Weinzapfel, a 26-year-old Caucasian female. Approximately six weeks ago, she called off her engagement with her fiancé whom she had been dating for the past four years. Recently, she contacted the Family Guidance Center and stated that she desperately needed to talk with someone. According to the intake workers notes, Maggie “sounded panicky” when she called to schedule an appointment to see a counselor (Pomeroy, 2015). Based on the information that was provided in case 5.1, Maggie appears to meet the criteria of major depressive disorder (F32.2) single episodes, severe without psychotic features (American Psychiatric Association, 2013). The symptoms cause clinically significant distress or impairment in social, occupational, or other important areas of functioning.
Example: Maggie’s symptoms are causing her to miss work and stay in bed all day. Although Maggie and her mother have never been very close it appears that her break up and the symptoms associated with this episode have caused her to have recent arguments with her mother.
C. The episode is not attributable to the physiological effects of a substance or another medical condition.

D. The occurrence of the major depressive episode is not better explained by schizoaffective disorder, schizophrenia, schizophreniform disorder, delusional disorder, or other specified: and unspecified schizophrenia spectrum and other psychotic disorders.

Based off of this information and the information provided in case 5.1, it is reasonable to believe that Maggie may be at some risk of suicide. During her interview, she had expressed that she has thought about “just wanting to ending it all.” Although she did stress that she does not believe she could ever actually harm herself, it would be beneficial to monitor her moods and behaviors to ensure her safety. Maggie does appear to have some protective factors in her life. She has a good relationship with her family, excluding her mother. She even stated that she has heard from her father several times making sure she is okay. Another positive factor in Maggie’s life is that she has experienced some relief by attending her appointment at the Family Guidance center and is planning to come
