1) Geography- Where were they located? What is the place called today? What effect did the geographic setting have on the civilization that grew there? Were they geographically isolated from other civilizations? Where they exposed to large bodies of water? Ancient Mayans were in the Yucatán, Quintana Roo was the entrance to where the Mayans lived. What that place is called today is Central America which now consists Yucatan, Guatemala, Belize and Southern Mexico (the Chiapas and Tabasco region). The effect geographic setting had on the Mayans were tropical rain forest of the lowlands, which was expanding from the northwestern of Honduras over the Petén of Guatemala, Belize and the Chiapas. This includes cities like Copan, Yinchuan, Tikal and Palenque. Guatemala had highlands, and the Pacific Coast where the Aztec influence in the early Classic period caused some differences in cultural development. The northern Yucatán peninsula, whose sites include Labná, Chichen Itzá and Uxmal, is defined by scrub vegetation, thin soil, and little surface water. The Mayans outdid themselves at agriculture, potter, hieroglyph, making the calendar and mathematics. The Mayans were around 1800 B.C through 250 A.D. In the late 800s, the Mayans deserted many of their cities, most of the great cities of the Maya were abandoned by A.D. 900 have caused their downfall.
