During the era of new imperialism, multiple western countries decided to imperialize, or take over, non-western countries. These non-western countries include China, India, Thailand, Vietnam, and more. Many forces were involved and responsible for new imperialism, which began in the late nineteenth century and twentieth century. Some of these included economic, political, and social forces. Economics included raw and natural resources and the increased need for them. Political forces encompass nationalism in certain western, European, countries. Lastly, social forces include racial superiority. As a result, many wars such as the Boer War, the Opium Wars, and more came about. Throughout the centuries, the reasons behind racial superiority changed; however, the white race always remained as the most superior race. During the nineteenth century, racial superiority was based on pseudosciences, fake sciences. One of these pseudosciences was Social Darwinism, which tried to explain that the white race is superior because of evolution and natural selection. According to document 5, the reason that the whites were better was also because of survival of the fittest, or natural selection. Later on, poet Rudyard Kipling wrote The White Man’s Burden to explain why America should participate in imperialization. Document 6 explains how the poem, The White Man’s Burden, depicts racial superiority. The Americans needed to help, or westernize, the Asians. However, the Asians are rude and think they are better (document 6). Other parts of the poem further elucidate why the white race needs to imperialize. This is due to the fact that the white race were the first ones to industrialize, so they are superior. Since they are better, they must teach everyone else how to catch up with them as well.
