Prior to the European age of exploration and conquest, the continent underwent many changes that lead to the desire and capability to begin exploration. The continent suffered a dark age of little innovation and great illness during the Middle Ages with the Black Death killing millions and spreading rapidly, and the Hundred Years’ War rampaging the continent increasing violence. By the 1350s, however, a new age of enlightenment descended upon the continent. The Renaissance spurred a new sense of creativity and individualism in an attempt to rebuild the declining continent. This is a trend that will continue to gain popularization as a justification for brutality and imperialism, especially in African imperialism. Giving them reason as superiors to aid in their education. Pope Paul III, a distinguished reformer, sees this as a necessity and duty of practicing catholics “to provide ample remedy for the evils” because they are “capable of understanding [and]desire exceedling to receive it” (Doc 7). In dying letter of 1504 Isabella asks that her family remain in the intentions of “to convert the peoples to our holy Catholic faith” (Doc 4). This is obviously very important to the queen (Why do you say this? What is the purpose for such a remark at this time?) and shows she has a positive response and attitude to exploration. Later though Pope Paul III feels the necessity to remind the missionaries non-Christians, “must not be deprived of their liberty” and he goes on to explain how they should be treated. This shows a changing attitude of the pope, as he sees a change in the methods and results, because of continuous efforts to reform, Council of Trent and new missionaries, it is natural and reasonable that he would attempt to keep the growing integrity of the Catholic Church.
