As the boycott on importing British goods began to sweep across the southern colonies reliance on American instead of British products, on homespun garments rather than imported attires, became a mark of American defiance. In the colonists’ view, the resistance caused a virtuous spirit of altruism as compared with the self-indulgence and luxury many Americans were coming to correlate with Britain, which resulted in separation from the colonists and the…
These two sources, in their attempts to differentiate each other and denounce the subject of their respective cartoons, produce a remarkable amount of parallels, as well as a few important differences. For similarities, the leading theme for both of the cartoons is that the opposing party’s candidate is a militarist warmonger. In Source A, this is demonstrated by portraying Democrat candidate Lewis Cass as a warlike automaton, composed of various cannons, bombs, and swords. The phrases “A WAR PRESIDENT” and “PROGRESSIVE DEMOCRACY” are stamped in bold letters on the page, clearly documenting the candidate’s flaws: under the guise of liberty and progressiveness, he would declare wars which would not benefit the American people as a whole. He…
Chamberlain knew that in order to win the war with Hitler he needed the people support a hundred percent and he need support from World War I allied countries like United States and Canada. By the 1850s, the two parties system was in crisis because moderate compromises such as the Missouri Compromise in 1820s by the “great pacificator,” Henry Clay of Kentucky could no longer appease both sides’ extreme radicals, as the territories kept getting westward expanded and ordained by the doctrine of Manifest Destiny. (Brands, p.295) The next generation of Congressmen such as Wilmot Proviso’s argument and Lewis Cass’s “Popular Sovereignty” failed to forge compromises over the Republican’s “slave–power conspiracy” and the Democrat’s “southern rights” as the Mexican War drew to a close. (Brands, p. 313) Especially, in January 1854, Senator Stephen Douglas’ introduction of the Kansas-Nebraska Act on the base of “Popular Sovereignty” to repeal the Missouri Compromise of 1820 in order to bring about the railroad to go through his home state in support of expansion and commerce was a major disaster. Accordingly, Douglas’ bill further worsened on the irreconcilable sectional division in his own Democratic Party, gave birth to the new Republican…

Not only did Germany disregard neutrality, but it refused to comply with international laws requiring attackers to issue a warning before firing and allowing people onboard to evacuate. The sinking of the Lusitania, a passenger ship, escalated the tension between Germany and the United States, leading Wilson to redefine neutrality as the indisputable right of neutral nations to trade and travel without interference. Although American-German relations were strained, Germany issued a pledge to halt unrestricted submarine warfare to appease the U.S. and prevent them from joining the war. Despite this, Wilson’s policy of neutrality ultimately failed because it was based on the cooperation of Germany. In early 1917, Germany decided to resume unrestricted submarine warfare.…
It could be argued that the main reason why so many of the accused were women is due to widespread misogyny in the 16th and 17th century. This can be supposed by the statistics of people persecuted during the period of 1550-1660. Trial records within Hungary and Essex show that the gender of a witch was traditionally a female as 91%-92% of women were convicted of being witches. Other larger countries such as France and Germany were thought to have 80% of female witches , whilst the Holy Roman Empire consisted of 82% . Such statistics support the view that witches were more commonly identified as women over men.…

America had not been on good terms with Germany before the war broke out, so this tragedy reinforced their anger towards the Germans.
